UPDATE: GUARDED won LASR’s Book of the Month

Guarded Time

Today I learned that Long and Short Reviews (LASR), who awarded Guarded an amazing five stars (which LASR do NOT just hand out to everyone), nominated it for September’s Book of the Month (Non-Erotic).

Even more incredible are the books that have been nominated alongside Guarded.

Right or wrong, I don’t enter my books into contests/competitions. Nominating my books for awards etc. is exactly what book promotion is all about, and I should really do more of it, but the thought alone makes me feel dirty. That’s why I’m always grateful if others go to the trouble of nominating and/or voting for my books. Thank you!

Update: The votes have been counted and I’m happy to announce Guarded came out on top. My thanks to everyone who voted.

You can read the LASR review here: image.

This comes only a week after Bookbuzzr (you might know it as Fraedo) interviewed me on their blog. You can read the interview here: http://www.bookbuzzr.com/blog/author-interviews/an-interview-with-amazon-best-selling-author-carmen-fox/.

Weeks like this are rare. Writers tend to focus on the negative, on the self-doubt, and I’m no exception. That said, I’m determined to celebrate for once.

I wish all of you a successful week, too.

Interview with Carmen Fox

Just a quick one today. My interview with Bookbuzzr is live on their blog now. Have you noticed that cool flip book on my Guarded page? It allows you to read the first chapter of Guarded free, in a book-like format. That’s just one of the cool features they offer to authors. They are also a great reader platform (Fraedo), where you can discover new books and even play games.

Anyway, to read the interview, please follow this link: http://www.bookbuzzr.com/blog/author-interviews/an-interview-with-amazon-best-selling-author-carmen-fox/.

Show, Don’t Tell

Immersive Writing at Your Fingertips

I strongly believe in the power of knowledge and learning. Man’s capacity to grasp complex rules and apply them is one of the things that sets us apart from animals. To harness this advantage, we should take a few minutes each day to work on ourselves. Read a newspaper article, watch a documentary, or indeed pick up a reference book.

Writing is my niche. It’s where I put much of my effort and a lot of my money. I have bought books on every writing subject under the sun. Some were excellent, others less so. Yet I was unable to find a book that explains in simple, step by step terms how to show and tell.

One day, years of practice and occasional glimpses of better writing combined in my head like jigsaw pieces to form one powerful Eureka moment.

I had it!

I understood why filter words are bad and how to show them the boot. I got when telling can aid us, and where it doesn’t work. I put my finger on instances where showing misses the mark, and how to do it well. The solutions were simple, powerful and transformative. Given all that, why had these concepts never been explained like that to me?

My writing suddenly took off, the better I got. My stories are more vibrant and immediate, and my characters are able to grab my readers by their collars and drag them along for the ride. If I do come across instances of telling in my text where showing would be preferable, the fix is easy.

Many new and intermediate writers encountered the same problems. They did a neat job of formulating great descriptions, but somehow their characters and plot did not have that 3D quality. A few months later, I looked up from my cocoon and saw others struggling to find their own Eureka moments, so I offered my limited wisdom to a handful of talented people.

Fast forward a few years, and the situation remained unchanged. Limited information bred lackluster books. So I set out to produce a guide, using real examples, that I hope will nudge writers in the right direction. Because the truth is, showing and telling aren’t rocket science, but if done right, they’re sure to give your books lift-off.

GUARDED and other NEWS

image

After spending an eternity editing, doing promo and formatting books to be sent out for proofreading, I’m now ready to finish my current book, the sequel to Guarded. Only 30k to go. Woot!

In case you’re wondering about the promo, yes, I’m talking about Guarded. If you haven’t yet bought it but want to, watch out for a limited-time price drop coming your way within the next few days. This may very well be the only and last price promotion for Guarded this year.

In case you’re interested, http://www.fkbt.com/ is one of the places helping me with my promotion.

My how-to guide Show Don’t Tell will be released on September 20, 2015, and it, too, will be available for a small price for a short time, so pick it up early.

Conversations With The Dead, a fun little side project, is coming to your Kindle store on October 5. But before you buy it, you should know I’m hoping to make it free around Halloween. I wish it could be free all the time, because the stories are so short it pains me to charge for them, but alas, Amazon only allows five free days.

I strive to be upfront about prices and to strike the middle-ground between my getting paid for the months or years it took to write, let alone the expenses I funneled into my books, and the wallet of your average voracious reader.

That’s it for now. Hope you’ll take advantage of the price promotions.

BLOG TOUR ENDS WITH A BANG

image

Yesterday was the last day of my blog tour. It’s been so much fun giving interviews and writing blog posts, even if not all blog stops worked out. A month ago we also had our scavenger hunt. Since then, Guarded hit the no. 1 spot in its two categories, and has received great reviews and one not-so-great review. For a book by an unknown author, Guarded did me proud.

Plus, I’ve been crazy busy at work.

A month of ups and downs then. So it’s nice to finish with a great interview and review on one of my favorite blogs. I’d love it if you took the time to read it. It’s also your last opportunity to enter the giveaways rafflecopter.

A big thank you to everyone who bought, read and/or reviewed Guarded, and to everyone who featured my book, shared my posts, gave advice and/or just helped me keep sane over the past month.

September will not see Guarded forgotten, although my focus will be on the release of my first writing guide.

So, here the link to the last stop on my tour. I hope you enjoy it.

LETTER TO A READER

image
Dear reader,

I’m messy. Lazy. I tend to do as much as I must to get it done well. In a sentence, I strive for an inch above average.

But not when it comes to writing. My books must be perfect, at least as perfect as I have the ability to make them. Every week, month and year I know more than before because I continue to learn. Middling reviews hurt, but I’ve learned to cope. Bad feedback will be worse, and I must steel myself.
But now and again someone likes my book a lot. That feeling…WOW. Nothing is like it.

At the core of every book lies the delicate, vulnerable heart of its author. To destroy or cherish it is a reader’s power.

Over the last few days my heart has received the red carpet treatment. A big thank you to you, dear reader, to Booklover Sue, to Pure Textuality, and to everyone who’s made me or their favorite author smile.

Your words matter as much as ours.

Love,

Carmen

BOOK REPORT – Two Weeks After Launch

Guarded has been out for two weeks. Time to take stock.

image

Book blitz: My book blitz was fun and interesting. Twenty stops in one day. Will do again.

Book tour: Halfway through, the results are mixed. Some bloggers have been fantastic. Others didn’t provide the promised review, did not post the blog post I spent hours writing, or didn’t bother to even feature my book. One blog did create a spotlight for me, but it was hidden behind another five they posted on the same day. I wonder how much exposure it received.

Launch event: The scavenger hunt Michelle and I created was a success. I had so much fun, and so did the others. Not as many readers as expected turned up, but many expressed their regret for missing it.

Sales: Preorder sales were good, and I probably sold more books in that first day than Divide And Conquer sold over the past five months (OMG. Has it only been five months?). All in all, it’s doing well.

I’m busy penning its sequel, scheduled for release in spring 2016. But first I’ll be releasing my writing booklet Show Don’t Tell and my anecdotal short stories Conversations With The Dead for Halloween.

Meanwhile, why not let me know how you enjoyed Guarded?

GUARDED BOOK TOUR

Guarded blog tour
My Blog Tour is happening, which can mean only one thing:

GUARDED is out.

Yup. After the release of the paperback and hardcopy of Guarded, my sexy urban fantasy mystery (NOT a romance, although there is smooching) is now hitting the virtual shelves.

Most of those who’ve read it also loved it, a couple of my early readers less so, but everyone agreed it’s a book that stayed with you. That makes me happy. To share my joy, please visit the following destinations and let me know what you liked and didn’t like about Ivy, Florian & Co.

WAIT OVER FOR FOX’s SEXY URBAN FANTASY MYSTERY

GUARDED now also available as eBook

Guarded
Today is the day we’ve been preparing for for months. Guarded has been unleashed onto the world. Anticipation about Carmen Fox’s most recent release is bubbling over, so now’s a good time to clear up any confusion.

Red City Review said about Guarded’s lead character,

“Ivy comes across as a hilarious but deeply flawed woman, and therein lies the drama as she must embrace her own flaws to save lives.”

If you wanted a one-sentence summary, this is it.

However, if you’re reading this post, you may be keen to delve a little deeper into Guarded. Let’s start with this one: what the devil is a ‘sexy urban fantasy mystery?’

Ivy’s the name of my main character. She’s funny, spunky, quirky, but far from perfect. Her best friend is Florian, Silverton’s best dressed vampire, no contest.

That’s the ‘urban fantasy’ part.

Starting on her 25th birthday, Ivy’s hormones upgrade even so-so guys to hell-yeah prospects, which she dismisses at first. See, Ivy’s a ‘good girl.’ But a visitor has unsettling news. Her cravings will not stop until she gets down and dirty with someone, and being the helpful guy he is, he offers his services. Thing is, he’s not the only one putting the moves on her, and truth be told, she’s not hating the attention either. Her neighbor’s looking yummy these days, not to mention her fingers-crossed-hopefully-soon-to-be boyfriend Greg. Her brain, body and heart are totally out of synch, but she must choose soon.

So much for the sexy.

Her body might be preoccupied with thoughts of a horizontal nature, but Ivy has an honest-to-God mystery on her hands. A fistful of nasty demons are after a statue in her possession, and she wants to know why. Ivy and her BFF Florian make good headway in their investigation, but the next blow’s already waiting around the corner. An old foe-slash-psychopathic-suitor comes back into Ivy’s life and he will claim her. Soon plot twists interweave into a frightening mess. Who broke into her house? Who’s trying to kidnap her? And who’s messing with her sanity? Ivy catches her first break when she digs into her boss’s sudden disappearance. At last, her questions yield answers — whether she likes them or not.

And that’s the mystery.

No, Guarded is not a traditional romance, because Ivy needs to stand on her own two feet, make mistakes, and find a way to accept who she is before she’s ready to commit to the man she loves.

No, Guarded is not erotica either. It contains three sex scenes in total, and a sprinkling of ‘moments.’

No, Guarded is not a straight-forward read. As the mystery heats up, clues come a-flying, and Ivy’s having a hard time keeping up.

So why in the four heavens should you read Guarded?

Here’s what others say:

“Guarded will turn you on mentally while igniting your sex drive all at the same time. Relish this one! It’s delicious.” –Janelle Alex, Ph.D. for Readers’ Favorite

“Guarded: The Silverton Chronicles is an action packed thriller with all sorts of seductive sizzle. A must-read!” –Bil Howard for Readers’ Favorite

“A saucy, urban thriller for adult eyes only, Guarded by Carmen Fox relies heavily on sexual plot twists, however the sharp writing makes for a heck of a ride.” –Red City Review

“Fox has created an intriguing and believable mythology that elevates this urban fantasy above the pack and gives it an epic fantasy feel as well.” –Jack Magnus for Readers’s Favorite

“The characters were wonderful, my favorite was Flo. There are secrets, betrayals, and a constant state of lust.” –Paranormal Romance Guild

If you’re still not sure, check out the book page for more details and reviews, or hop over to your favorite retailer’s website. We also offer a free .pdf copy including 11 first chapters by 11 great authors to anyone who requests it. The entire first chapter of Guarded is included. Yup. Read before you buy.

If you like fun, quirky characters, a touch of paranormal sexy time, and aren’t afraid of a meaty mystery, why not give ‘Guarded’ a go?
NB: Price will go up in September.

Release Article by Amanda C.

Why does Amanda C. care?

Because I love this book. I enjoy getting lost in magical worlds and words, and Carmen delivers on both fronts. I’m not going to lie to you. This is intelligent reading. If you’re used to simple man/woman romances, you probably won’t like Guarded. In fact, there’s nothing simple about it. It has a complex, true-to-life cast, and the mystery isn’t cookie-cutter predictable either. Instead, the story drags you in, and if you’re open to all the elements Carmen has woven into the plot, your payoff is extraordinary. It’s fun, it’s sexy, and it will keep you guessing along with Ivy, the hero of the novel. I can’t wait for the sequel. Write faster, Carmen!
